Fourth of July Fun Activities

Do you want to do something special and make a mark of your name in festive sky on July 4th this year? Just scoop some precious time out of your busy schedule and sit with your partner to plan for throwing a wonderful party. Just imagine how great will the moment be amidst all your loved ones with lots of special dishes, music, and drinks under the amazing hues of firework flashes in the dark sky.

Parties have always been an inseparable part in celebration of 4th of July since 1777 when we officially celebrated our Independence Day. You would probably want to throw a 4th of July party that would be unique and would surprise your guests on Independence Day 2007. So think of a wonderful patriotic theme for your party. An attentive hosting is the secret of the success story for any party and a 4th of July party needs some extra attention, as the day is extra special for us.

An alfresco backyard Independence Day party would probably be the most exciting theme that your guests would love to remember even after years. And who does not want to be remembered for his or her special ideas? There are several things to be considered with utmost seriousness, if you are planning for a special 4th of July party.

Invitation: Sending out the invitation as soon as possible is the first step to take your 4th of July party towards success. Remember that your party is actually a family affair. So invite all your dearest friends and relatives and their kids.

It is quite simple, yet attractive to make hand made invitations for your guests. All you need to have is some degree of patience, a sense of creativity and some important supplies. But remember that the invitations are meant for your Independence Day party. So it would be a great idea to create an invitation card with red, white and blue. What better way to create a 4th of July party invitation card than to print an inspirational picture of our waving flag with the clear blue sky as a background? You can design the card by yourself on your PC and select the text carefully. Put the specialized paper into your printer and come up with a stylized Independence Day party invitation card, which should be 8 1/2 x 11 in dimension. This is the standard dimension. You can also get customized online invitations cards.

Don't forget to make your guests aware of the fact that your Independence Day party is going to be held outdoor so advice them to bring light jackets.

Decoration: Your 4th of July party decoration is another vital part, which should be put special emphasis on. Choose the napkins, plates, tablecloths and cups all in red white and blue. You can keep a small flag in the middle of each table to add a little bit of ambiance. This would definitely add to the decor of your 4th of July party. You can even have the kids help out with Fourth of July arts and crafts Add special patriotic fervor to the atmosphere by decorating all the bushes and trees with balloons and shimmering lights in red, white and blue. You can keep a large aquarium in the middle of the party ground and keep some red orinda gold fishes, blue gouramies and white angels. This will also be an added fun for the kids. Make sure you also check out this online discount mart for July Fourth decorations (http://www.onlinediscountmart.com/4th-of-july-decorations.html).

Music: Music plays another very significant role in any festive event. When it comes to an Independence Day party, selecting songs is probably the most serious issue to be considered with much care. Put special effects to the atmosphere by playing the songs like “Yankee Doodle Dandy”, The Stars and Stripes”, “America the Beautiful” etc. You can also play some modern jazz or country to bring out a different mood. If you're at a loss as to where to get patriotic songs you can check out the links at Patriotic Song depot () here. You can even check out these set of July Fourth links to see the historical documents.

Food: You should be very selective in serving foods. Plan for some special American dishes. The best idea is to serve specially prepared hamburgers, deviled eggs, potato salad and hot dogs. Corn on the cob is also a smart choice however. Gelatin desserts made in red, white and blue will really be awesome in such a patriotic party. Don't forget to keep dishes such as veg-burgers or tofu dogs for the vegetarian section of the gathering. You can also take a look at my previous posts on Fourth of July recipes.

Special Events: Select the songs that will make your guests rock. Dance and let them dance. But special things will make your Independence Day party a success story. How about closing the eve with some elegant fireworks? But be sure to lend special attention on your little naughty guests. Enjoy some ecstatic sparklers and sky rockets to celebrate our nation's 231st birthday anniversary.

All these will merge together to sprinkle the feelings of patriotism on you and your guests. End up the gathering with three loud cheers in the honor of the nation's birthday. Do not forget to load your camera and capture the special moments of celebrating the fourth with such an inspirational 4th of July party. Do not forget to send 4th of July ecards with your cordial wishes to those who will not be able to join you on the special eve.

Special Fourth of July Drink

Having a picnic or a Fourth of July party is the best part of the summer. But whatever you do, it won't be complete without having a special drink at your party. How about a special fruit juice with a little bit of Vodka added? Here is the recipe to make the special Fourth of July drink.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz. Of vodka

  • 8 qtr. Cranberry juice

  • 1 cups lemon juice

  • 12 cups orange juice

  • 12cup pineapple juice

  • 4 slices of oranges

  • little amount of chilled ginger ale

Mixology

Mix them properly and combine the vodka with the mixture in a large container. Stir it well after adding the ginger ale and serve it with some orange slices added to it. This is for two people. You can make as much as you need. If you can arrange for a large ice bucket then that will give you some extra pleasure without a doubt!

Fourth of July BBQ Tips for Diabetics

According to the American Diabetes Association or ADA, there are 20.8 million children and adults in the United States -- that's 7% of the population, who have diabetes. That's not the end, an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed with diabetes. And 6.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are not aware that they have the disease.

There's a lot of things that you can have and you cannot have when you're a diabetic. But that doesn't mean you can't enjoy great BBQs for your Fourth of July. DLife is a wonderful resource of a website which explains to you what diabetes mean to people like you and me. Even famous people have diabetes. You can read their stories and know how the manage. The best part about the site is that they have recipes for diabetics. I found this great BBQ recipe for your Fourth of July. It's easy to follow since it's a video so check it out.

4th July Recipes

Potato Salad

6 (2 pounds) medium potatoes
3/4 cup chopped sweet pickles
2 tablespoons chopped onion
3/4 cup chopped celery
2 tablespoons sliced or chopped pimiento*
2 teaspoons salt or to taste
1 1/2 teaspoons celery seeds
Potato Salad Dressing (see recipe below)
6 hard-cook eggs (5 chopped and 1 sliced)
Fresh parsley
Paprika

* Pimientos are roasted sweet red peppers that have been preserved in oil. TIP: After opening and using part of a jar of pimientos, to prolong life of remaining pimientos, add a teaspoon of white vinegar and refrigerate.

In a large pan over medium-high heat, add potatoes and cover with cold water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, approximately 12 to 15 minutes or until just tender. Remove from heat and drain. NOTE: I usually remove the skins when the potatoes have cooled enough to hold. As soon as you can handle the potatoes, cut the warm potatoes into bite-sized chunks and place in a large mixing bowl.

Add sweet pickles, onion, celery, and pimiento to the potato chunks. Sprinkle with salt and celery seeds; stir until well blended.

Prepare Potato Salad Dressing. Pour salad dressing over the potato mixture; toss gently. Add 5 chopped hard-cooked eggs, gently mixing into potato salad. Refrigerate salad several hours. If potato mixture gets too dry, add additional mayonnaise and 2 teaspoon sweet pickle juice.

Place salad into a large serving bowl and garnish with remaining sliced hard-cooked egg. Sprinkle parsley around edge of bowl and sprinkle paprika over sliced eggs. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight before serving.

Makes 10 to 12 servings.

Potato Salad Dressing:
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1 1/2 tablespoons prepared mustard
1 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon sweet pickle juice

In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, prepared mustard, sugar, and sweet pickle juice; stir until well blended.

Apple Pie

Pastry for 9-inch two crust pie
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
5 to 6 medium (2 pounds) green tart cooking apples
2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
1 to 2 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon sugar

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Prepare pie pastry. In a large bowl, combine sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Peel, core, and slice apples 1/4-inch thick. Toss apple slices in sugar mixture until well coated. Spoon apple filling into pastry-lined pie plate and dot with butter. Cover with remaining pastry and flute. Cut slits in pastry so stream can escape. Brush milk over top and then sprinkle 1 tablespoon sugar onto top of pie crust.

Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until crust is golden brown and apples are tender. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack before cutting and serving. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Makes 8 servings.

Red, White and Blue Trifle For July Fourth

1 (18 1/4-ounce) package yellow cake mix*
1 cup raspberry jam, divided
3 cups fresh raspberries and blueberries, divided**
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup sherry, or brandy, divided (optional)
1 (6-serving size) vanilla pudding mix (not instant)
3 cups milk
2 cups sweetened whipped cream
Sliced toasted almonds

* A purchased sponge cake may be substituted.

** Fresh local strawberries may also be used.

Prepare the yellow cake according to package directions using a 9-inch cake pan (reserve one layer for another use).

In a large bowl, mix together berries and sugar; let set at room temperature for at least 30 minutes to let juices form.

Slice one baked cake layer horizontally into two equal layers. Place one sliced cake layer into a trifle dish or a large glass bowl with straight sides; cover with 1/2 cup raspberry jam and 1/2 of berries and juice.

Pour 1/4 cup sherry or brandy over the top, as evenly as possible. Place the second sliced cake layer on top and cover with remaining raspberry jam, berries, and berry juice; pour remaining sherry or brandy over the top.

Prepare the vanilla pudding according to package directions, using the only 3 cups of milk. Pour hot pudding over the top of the cake; let cool. When cool, spread with whipped cream. Decorate with toasted sliced almonds. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. When ready to serve, decorate top with whole berries

Makes 10 to 12 servings.

Tips For Fun and festive Fireworks on July 4th
People everywhere are fascinated by fireworks -- by the mystery and splendor that light the night sky or turn a backyard into a festival of light and sound. Like nothing else, fireworks can excite, thrill and amaze us. But as dazzling as fireworks can be, they can also be harmful if used improperly.

The National Council on Fireworks Safety (NCFS) urges you to put safety first when celebrating this Fourth of July. Legal fireworks are safer than ever, in part because of stringent federal safety standards enacted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in 1976. The incidence of fireworks-related injuries has dropped dramatically during the past 10 years, according to Ann Crampton, executive director of the NCFS. But she says it can be cut further by following a few simple guidelines.

"Only use legal fireworks," she says. "The key, of course, is being able to recognize what's legal and what's not. Legal fireworks conform to the standards. Illegal ones often don't."

The Consumer Product Safety Commission requires that legal fireworks show the name of the item, the name of the manufacturer or distributor and easy-to-read cautionary labeling and instructions for proper use. Currently, 32 states, plus the District of Columbia, allow the use of some or all types of consumer fireworks.

"Commonly used fireworks include cones, fountains, and sparklers," Ms. Crampton says. "Before setting off any fireworks, contact your local police or fire department to make sure fireworks are allowed in your area."

Illegal devices include M80s, M100s and silver salutes. They have been federally banned since 1966 because of the large amounts of illegal explosives they contain. "Don't confuse these items with legal, consumer fireworks. Illegal devices will usually be unlabeled, will not bear a caution statement and will not list the manufacturer's name," cautioned Ms. Crampton. "Illegal explosive devices are extremely dangerous and can cause serious injuries. If you find any illegal items, or know of anyone selling them, contact the police immediately."

If you choose to use consumer fireworks to celebrate this year's Fourth of July festivities, remember the following safety tips from the National Council on Fireworks Safety:

* A responsible adult should supervise all fireworks activities.
* Never give fireworks to young children.
* Always purchase fireworks from reliable sources.
* Follow label directions carefully.
* Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
* Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from buildings and vehicles.
* Never carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them in metal or glass containers.
* Light them one at a time then move back quickly.
* Don't experiment with homemade fireworks.
* Observe local laws and use common sense.
* Sparklers, fountains and other items that many states allow for use by consumers are not appropriate when a large crowd is present.
* If attending a community display, leave your own fireworks at home -- there will be plenty of excitement provided by the display.

Fourth of July Fun Facts

The Fourth of July 2007 Fun Facts and Statistics

On this day in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress, triggering the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation. As always, this most American of holidays will be marked by parades, fireworks and backyard barbecues across the country.

2.5 million
In July 1776, the estimated number of people living in the newly independent nation.
(1776 population from Historical Statistics of the United States: Colonial Times to 1970.)

302 million
The nation’s population on this July Fourth.

Fourth of July Cookouts

More than 1 in 4
The chance that the hot dogs and pork sausages consumed on the Fourth originated in Iowa. The Hawkeye State had a total of 15.5 million market hogs and pigs on March 1. This represents more than one-fourth of the nation’s total. North Carolina (8.4 million) and Minnesota (6.2 million) were the runners-up.

6.8 billion pounds
Total production of cattle and calves in Texas in 2006. Chances are good that the beef hot dogs, steaks and burgers on your backyard grill came from the Lone Star State, which accounted for about one-sixth of the nation’s total production. And if they did not come from Texas, they very well may have come from Nebraska (4.8 billion pounds) or Kansas (4.1 billion pounds).

6
Number of states in which the revenue from broiler chickens was $1 billion or greater between December 2005 and November 2006. There is a good chance that one of these states — Georgia, Arkansas, Alabama, North Carolina, Mississippi or Texas — is the source of your barbecued chicken.

Another popular Fourth of July side dish is corn on the cob. Florida, California, Georgia and New York together accounted for 60 percent of the sweet corn produced nationally in 2006.

Please Pass the Potato Salad

The ketchup on your hamburger or hot dog probably came from California, which accounted for 95 percent of processed tomato production in 2006.

Florida

Disneyland – The first name that comes to our mind while speaking about fireworks on July 4 is Disneyland. They have it in Southern Cali too! Although it is like 4th of July all the year round, over there when it's originally our nation's birthday, Disneyland gets adorned with some new shades and colors every 4th of July. Fireworks in Disneyland on Independence Day add to the aesthetic beauty of the place. You can check out more info at A Guide to Anaheim where Disneyland Cali is located.

New Port Beach – Besides the fabulous 4th of July boat Parade during the day, New Port Beach offers the largest firework show in Southern California to flash on the evening entertainment. If you have not yet experienced the ecstatic view of New Port Beach on Independence Day, do not miss it this year. You can also learn more about New Port Beach here.

San Diego – San Diego celebrates the fourth in an awesome way. Perhaps the greatest attraction of San Diego on July 4 is the grand display of technically advanced fireworks choreographed to music that keeps the city rocking and emblazoned almost the full length of night. The best viewing spots include North Embarcadero, Shelter Island, Coronado Landing, Seaport Village and Harbor Island. Check out Parties in San Diego to know more about the programs

Hollywood Bowl – Each year Hollywood Bowl's special firework celebration of Independence Day adds essence to its summer concert season excitement. With a siting capacity of almost 18000 heads, Hollywood Bowl is hardly seen overcrowded thorough out the summer concert season. But just be sure to arrive little earlier to watch the aesthetic fireworks on July 4. Get tickets fast!

Big Bear
- Every year Big Bear celebrates the fourth of July with awesome display of fireworks sponsored by the Big Bear Rotary Club.
